Gabelli Sophomore Consulting Challenge (CCIP): Cite Your Sources

This guide has been created for students enrolled in the Gabelli Sophomore Consulting Challenge course. It is designed to supplement the submission assignment handouts and course blackboard content.

Why cite your sources?

Developing a strong knowledge of core business information sources will help prepare you for a successful career in business.  If you take the time to learn how to search efficiently and effectively, to exercise discretion when using text and data, and to cite the sources you use, you will earn the respect and trust of your professional associates. 

  • Collect citation information at the same time that you collect your sources. 
  • If you use computer-generated content or citations, check for accuracy.

Sample APA Citation

"Nonperiodical Web Document or Report : List as much of the following information as possible (you sometimes have to hunt around to find the information; don't be lazy. If there is a page like https://www.somesite.com/somepage.htm, and somepage.htm doesn't have the information you're looking for, move up the URL to https://www.somesite.com/)"

Corporate name of information provider. (Date of publication or n.d.). Title of company or industry report or data set. Retrieved from Database Name. https:// web address.

  • Mergent, Inc. (n.d.). Apple Inc. Company Financials Report 2011-2017. Retrieved from Mergent Online. web address
  • Apple Inc. (n.d.). 2017 Form 10-K. Retrieved from Mergent Online. web address
 
 

"Cite online databases (e.g. LexisNexis, ProQuest, JSTOR, ScienceDirect) and other subscription services as containers. Thus, provide the title of the database italicized before the DOI or URL. If a DOI is not provided, use the URL instead. Provide the date of access if you wish."

Corporate name of information provider. "Name of company or industry report or data set." date. Database Name, web address.

Here are possible MLA examples for two reports found in Mergent Online: a Mergent financial analysis report, and the company's 10-K:

  • Mergent, Inc. "Apple Inc. Company Financials Report. 2010-2017." n.d. Mergent Online, web address.
  • Apple Inc. "2017 Form 10-K." n.d. Mergent Online, web address.

APA Style

APA Style is the citation style from the American Psychological Association (APA) for the social sciences, behavioral sciences, and many other sciences.  Here is a link to the APA Style website: https://apastyle.apa.org/

MLA Style

Chicago Manual of Style

Chicago Style is from the University of Chicago Press and is used in Economics and other disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. Turabian is based on Chicago and was designed for students writing term papers.
