Perhaps the best-known Danish writer in history, Andersen (1805-75) invented a new literary style. Most of his fairy tales were intended for serious adult readers, but were written so straightforwardly as to also be accessible for children. While most readers have heard of "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling," Andersen also wrote many complex and darker tales rarely included in anthologies, as well as novels, travel literature, plays, poems and multiple autobiographies.
Even less known is Andersen's work as a visual artist. His paper cuttings echo the special imaginative universe of his tales. His collages were created long before that form became artistically fashionable.
