Yet in spite of his unquestioned status as a classic of the stage, Ibsen is often dismissed as a boring old realist, whose plays are of interest only because they remain the gateway tomodern theater. Some say the long arc of the moral universe bends toward justice. Ibsen says the cosmic trajectory bends toward tragedy and is scarcely moral. This, in effect, is what Sprinchorn demonstrates in his exemplary biography of the so-called Norwegian sphinx, whose artistry is still celebrated in playhouses and classrooms all over the world. In the theater of life unvarnished, the kingdom Ibsen dominates with a regalness practitioners of the craft rarely exhibit, humankind is caught in an inescapable double bind. If one conforms to society’s inherently conservative conventions, which often ground themselves in illusory abstract ideals myopically raised to inviolable ethical absolutes, one is likely to live a psychologically stunted life at a minimum and perhaps suffer even worse consequences. Yet, if one conscientiously departs from the established norm in search of unbridled freedom and fulfillment, venturing all or nothing in the process, one is apt to fall hard, causing grave harm to self and others along the way. Ibsen staged the existential dilemma superbly, unafraid to shock his somnambulant audiences out of their misbegotten complacency. However, he left it to others to square the circle.
