Fire Extinguishers

How to use a fire extinguisher

There are different types of extinguishers for different types of fire. For example, you would never use the Type A, a water based extinguisher, on a grease fire. You will notice that most work places have a multi purpose fire extinguisher, or ABC, which can be used on all types of fires.

Fire

The smallest of fires can quickly spread and engulf a building. Libraries are particularly vulnerable due to the large number of books and papers. The major cause of fatality is the smoke, not the fire. It is imperative that the area be contained and everyone evacuated immediately.

Familiarize yourself now with the location of fire extinguishers and fire exits.

EVACUATION

Review evacuation procedures for your building. Security has prepared procedures for all three libraries and performs fire drills regularly.

- Clear researchers from your floor

- Check rest rooms

- Evacuate calmly and swiftly

- Do not use elevators

- Notify Security if anyone is still in the building
