Identity theft and fraud are becoming growing concerns.  While we are at risk for having our identity stolen, as employees at an academic institution we also put others at stake.  A company credit card or private student information can be comprimised on our watch. Universities are the third most spammed sectors and over 1/2 of emails are spam.

 

Keep office desk clear of passwords lists, id numbers and personal information regarding staff, students or patrons.

Keep virus software up to date.

Create a $Tr0ng password. A combination of letters and numbers, capitals and small. Do not use pet's names, spouse's or children's name, phone numbers or social security numbers. For an example of what NOT to do, below are the top 5 most frequently used passwords.

  • 123456
  • 12345678
  • 1234
  • qwerty

Avoid spams and phishing. No business should contact you for personal information. 

Change your password at least every six months. And never use the same password for all your logins.

Protect Your Data. You can always replace a stolen laptop but, not necessarily the files that were on it..All data files are stored on a laptop harddrive or USB thumb drive should be backed up.If you have confidential information on your devices, you should considered using disk encryption. Password protect all devices including cell phones and tablets with a power on password.
