Chemistry Protocols & Methods

Protocols are formal, official records of scientific experimentation. They provide detailed instructions and procedures for reproducing laboratory techniques and methods in the sciences.

Protocols describe the background, objectives, research design, methods, materials, and organization of scientific research experiments. These publications are also peer reviewed, so the protocols and methods are proven to be reproducible.

How to Search for Protocols & Methods

When searching for methods and protocols, you can input your initial topic keywords into OneSearch and add protocol or method at the end. For example:

  • "Molecular biology" AND protocols
  • Chem* AND methods
  • Chem* AND (methods OR protocols)

The asterisk (*) is a truncation method. When you search for chem* you will retrieve any word that starts with that root, such as chemistry, chemical, chemotaxis, etc.

You also may want to add laboratory manual to the end of your search. For example:

  • Chem* AND "laboratory manual"
  • Biol* AND "laboratory manual"

You should keep laboratory manual in quotation marks because it is a phrase. This indicates to your database that you want to keep the two words together in your search.
