For thirty-five seasons, The Ohio Light Opera has dedicated itself to the exploration and production of the best of traditional operetta and musical theater. Founded by James Stuart as a Gilbert and Sullivan repertory summer festival, the company has grown to encompass all forms in the light opera canon. This includes the complete Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, as well as the recognized treasures from the Viennese, French, Hungarian, German, and American repertoire

The Vienna State Opera is prized for its exceptional acoustics. There are performances almost 300 nights a year and a different billing virtually every day. The Theater an der Wien has established a name for itself as „the other“ venue for opera. New premieres each month — from baroque to contemporary — are a hit among opera-goers. Meanwhile at the Vienna Chamber Opera, the focus is on rarities. The Volksoper presents classic operas in German, musicals and lively operettas.

Welcome to the Gilbert and Sullivan Archive, which is devoted to the operas and other works of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. We also have some pages relating to other light operas of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Archive, which was established in September 1993, includes a variety of G&S related items, including clip art, librettos, plot summaries, pictures of the original G&S stars, song scores, midi and mpeg audio files, and newsletter articles. New items are being added regularly.

The nearby town of Buxton is the home of the three week Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, which has been held each year for the past fifteen years. During the famous estrangement of W. S. Gilbert (libretto) and Arthur Sullivan (music) during the early 1890's, Sullivan sought out librettist Sydney Grundy and collaborated on the 1892 operetta entitled Haddon Hall. It was successful in its time, but revivals were discarded by the Savoy Opera Company in favor of the ever popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. You can find all sorts of Gilbert and Sullivan ephemera on this site including full copies of hard-to-find works by both men.

The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company performed Gilbert & Sullivan opera for 107 years-from 1875 when Trial by Jury received its first performance at the Royalty Theatre, London, until February 27, 1982, when the curtain didn't ring down on a special "Last Night" production at the Adelphi. The Company also produced works by other composers and librettists in the early years.

This site is a tribute to the nearly 3,000 performers who appeared on stage with the D'Oyly Carte or conducted their orchestras for those 107 years.

This Society was founded thirty-seven years ago and from small beginnings has grown to become a major force in the current revival of interest in Sullivan and his music. With regular residential events, magazines and books and an extensive library of performing material, we aim to cover all aspects of the composer's work.
