Images must have text alternatives (alt-text) assigned to them to describe their information and purpose. The Web Accessibility Initiative of W3C categorizes the following 7 image concepts:
Informative images
Decorative images
Functional images
Images of text
Complex images such as graphs and diagrams
Groups of images
Image maps
Try the Images Tutorial from the Web Accessibility Initiative of W3C to learn more about each image type and strategies for assigning alt-text.
Try the alt Decision Tree portion of the tutorial for a quick guide on how to assign alt-text to a sampling of use cases.
